CULTURAL SUPERVISION
Cultural supervision provides a culturally safe space to share and reflect on complex matters impacting on an individual or a team of people. The process is solution focused, identifying strength-based strategies through a cultural lens, by sharing knowledge and wisdoms that is beneficial to First Nations employees, in managing their cultural loads. Cultural supervision is different from clinical or regular supervision, whereby, the supervision is facilitated by a First Nations person and conducted through a cultural lens. Cultural supervision is also offered to non-First Nations people.
NICCAS cultural supervisors have years of clinical and community experience, are recognised in their communities for having credibility in the cultural wellbeing and wellness space; these first-hand experiences and the continuity of their contributions to community, establishing a reputable level of cultural authority.
Cultural coaching is the form of cultural supervision provided to First Nations employees, as a professional and personal development practice which builds capacity to operate in workplace settings where institutional and systemic racism is embedded in policy and filters into practice. We do this by building awareness about imperialism in colonisation, and exploring the concept of decolonisation and embedding cultural design, in identifying a culturally safe pathway forward.
Cultural mentoring is the form of cultural supervision provided to non-First Nation employees, who manage or work closely with First Nations employees, and/or deliver a service to First Nations peoples; also, a professional and personal development practice which builds capabilities to look deeper into the organisation’s ways of knowing, doing and being. We do this by reflecting on organisational policies, procedures and related strategies that guide current models of operations and initiatives in offering a culturally safe and inclusive space to First Nations peoples.
